Teen Eye Rolls: How to Respond Effectively & Calmly

How to Help Your Teen Manage Stress Without Adding Pressure

Teen stress can be intense. Between school, friends, family expectations, and social media—it can build up fast.

But with the right kind of support, your teen can learn to manage stress in a healthy, lasting way.

It starts with empathy, understanding, and the right tools—not more pressure.

Here are 3 ways to help:

1. Lead with Empathy
Instead of asking “Why are you stressed?”, try:
• “What’s been weighing on you lately?”
• “Do you want to talk about what’s going on?”

Let them feel seen before offering advice.

2. Offer Support, Not Solutions
Ask:
• “How can I support you right now?”
• “Do you want help with a plan or just need to vent?”

This keeps the power in their hands—and builds trust.

3. Give Them Tools
Help them explore:
• Journaling
• Movement or exercise
• Breaks from screens
• Talking to someone they trust
• Breathing techniques

Teen stress doesn’t need to be a solo battle. And it doesn’t need to be fixed in one conversation.

Sometimes the best support is showing up, listening, and giving them the space to figure things out—with you in their corner.
