The Ones Who Once Needed the Help Make the Most Powerful Mentors
This Is What Happens When You Let People Heal by Helping
You know what gives me hope?
When someone who once needed help decides they’re ready to give it.
After one of our mentor training sessions last week, someone said, “That was such a great group.” I couldn’t agree more. The energy felt different. Real. When you’re surrounded by people who are kind, grateful, and want nothing more than to guide someone through the same challenges they’ve faced, it hits deep. It’s not transactional; it’s wholesome.
As we went around the video call, people opened up. Some shared stories of pain, loss, and hopelessness. Many once believed there was no path forward. Hearing them speak, I couldn’t stop smiling. It felt magical. I thought about Maddie and how proud she’d be of what she inspired. I caught myself welling up with tears more than once. These kind souls had wished for someone to walk beside them when life felt unbearable. Now, they want to be that light for someone else.
Some of our mentees have said they want to do the same, to give what they’ve gained from the MentorWell. Not everyone is ready to mentor. Some struggle not to interrupt or jump in with advice. But those who embrace it see how powerful it can be. And the power of emotional intelligence can elevate relationships to new levels.
They take it home and to work. They pause before reacting. They rewrite emails. They listen with curiosity instead of trying to fix. That shift builds trust, empathy, and stronger, more meaningful relationships.
And here’s the part I love most, it helps the mentors, too. They find healing. Meaning. Perspective.
What started from tragedy has grown into something truly beautiful.
Kids gain confidence, direction, and resilience. Mentees start to open up about what they’ve been carrying for in some cases years. They learn to believe in themselves again.
Every time someone hears Maddie’s story and chooses to be part of this, I’m reminded why we started.
Yes, we’ll save lives. But more than that, we’ll help young people walk taller, knowing they can face anything that comes their way.
This is what the MentorWell is all about. And I can’t think of a more beautiful legacy that Maddie could’ve left behind.
